Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Peter Rollins, my new reading infatuation, tells a parable about a group that came to follow Jesus. In the parable, Jesus talked about a man all of his possessions to obtain a pearl. The pearl is like the kingdom of God. The group began to converse with one another about the value of the pearl. Saying, how much value the pearl must have in order to sell everything. Then Jesus approached a woman and they talked about the pearl. The woman realized that the kingdom is priceless because if you were willing to sacrifice everything for it. Jesus agreed with her, and told her, that the only value in this pearl is the beauty of the pearl. The Kingdom is so beautiful, that it is our infatuation, not the value of it.
The kingdom belongs to the poor in spirit. This is the proclamation of Jesus, that those who are poor in spirit obtain the greatest amount of beauty. God is at the greatest work in the poor in spirit. The greatest beauty is within the poor in spirit, because, this is the greatest demonstration of what it means to be human.
