Why I don’t like reality.

I hate to say it, but, I really have a man crush on Gerard Butler. Obviously, every single guy on the earth on this earth likes the movie 300. If you don’t, I question your manhood. I also loved him in Law Abiding Citizen with Jamie Foxx, what a brilliant villain. One of my favorite characters he has ever played is Mike Chadway in the movie The Ugly Truth. One of my favorite scenes in this movie is at the end where Gerard tells the neurotic Katherine Heigl that he loves her. And, when she asks him, all he can respond is, “Beats the Sh** out of me.”

What I love about this scene is that explains something called Hyper Reality. Hyper Reality is explained as the real behind the real. This type of reality is at the heart of what makes truly meaningful. You ask anyone, who truly loves anyone, why they love anyone, and, there isn’t a good explanation. It’s beyond words. It’s beyond conception. If I were to have a checklist for my friends, for any future love interests, for my family, I am not allowing myself to truly experience them, and, to love them unconditionally.

Hyper Reality is at the heart of Christianity. Hyper Reality is what makes the impossible, possible. It’s at the heart of Jesus and his ministry of reconciliation. Jesus tells us to love our enemies, for us to love those who are unlovable. The very act of forgiveness, true forgiveness, is an act of hyper reality. Forgiveness, by definition, is releasing someone from a debt that they cannot repay you. Hyper Reality allows the deadness of the human soul and body, to be resurrected and experience rebirth. We see Jesus desire those who are undesirable to society. Paul talks about hyper reality when in 1st Corinthians when he said and requotes Isaiah 64:4-

“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
the things God has prepared for those who love him”

Jesus demonstrated this on the cross by using his death, to save what is beyond saving, humanity. This is salvation, God saving the world back to himself. This is demonstrated by mankind participating in a part of a four fold Gospel. Mankind reconciling the relationship between themselves and God, between themselves and others, between themselves and themselves, and between themselves and the groaning creation.

Participating in hyper reality is to take the words of Saint Augustine to heart- Seek not to understand that you may believe, but believe that you may understand.
