Jesus said, “the kingdom of God is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2)
Then Jesus said in his way to teach us how pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)
One teaches that God’s kingdom is present (3:2), then the other is saying we need the will of kingdom of heaven to come down to the kingdom of earth, because the two are not congruent with one another. This is the painful reality that we are caught in between a place of darkness and light. That we live in light, but its not yet situated.
If we think of the Kingdom of God as a light bulb it makes it easier. There is a brief moment when we hit the switch of a light, where the room is still dark. The speed of light is so fast that the room is filled with light, but we don’t see it. This is the Kingdom of God, it’s present but we cannot fully see it yet.We are waiting for God to return, so his kingdom can be fully present.
This is also the call of Christians. To live in a world that is lit, but we don’t always see the light. Are we living in the presence of light? Or, are we living in the presence of darkness? Are we living in the presence of God? Or, are we living in the presence of the Kingdom of Earth? Are we living in the reality of what is? Or the reality of what will be?
